Fault Recovery in a Real-Time Switched Ethernet Architecture

چکیده
As distributed multimedia applications enter the mainstream, Quality-of-Service (QoS) becomes the central focus of state-of-the-art network devices. The QoS of a network connection is determined on an end-to-end basis by all the network devices through which it traverses. EtheReal is a real-time switched Ethernet architecture that aims to provide QoS guarantees over local area networks, thus offering the "last-mile" QoS link to the end hosts when coupled with QoS-capable IP routers. EtheReal's QoS support is innovative because it does not require any modifications to end hosts' operating systems and network interface cards. Because of its connection-oriented architecture, EtheReal switches maintain per-connection state, which complicates the fault recovery process when link/switch failures occur. This paper describes the fault handling techniques employed in EtheReal, specifically a propagation-order spanning tree algorithm and multiple-spanning-tree routing, to achieve fast and transparent network fault recovery. Based on measurements from a fully operational EtheReal switch network testbed, we show that single link failures can be recovered, at the EtheReal connection level, within 31 msec, which equates to dropping one frame in a 30-frame-per-second video connection.

Automatic Fault Detection and Recovery in Real Time Switched Ethernet Networks
EtheReal is a real-time Fast Ethernet switch architecture that provides bandwidth guarantees to distributed multimedia applications without OS and hardware modifications on the host machines. It implements true link-layer multicast, and offers a natural match to support networklayer QoS protocols such as RSVP. Because real-time performance guarantees fundamentally require state to be installed ...
متن کاملVirtualisierte, fehlertolerante Systemplattform für automotive Systeme
Most innovations in today’s cars happen to be in the embedded electronics. However, common component-based system architectures, i.e., electronic control units (ECUs) connected by different automotive busses, are unable to deal with the increasing complexity and heterogeneity of many modern applications. To overcome this problem, a new event-triggered system platform is presented in this thesis...

Switched networks have an increasingly important role in real-time communications. The IEEE Ethernet standards have defined prioritized traffic (802.1p) and other QoS mechanisms (802.1q). The Avionics FullDuplex Switched Ethernet (AFDX) standard defines a hard real-time network based on switched Ethernet. Clock synchronization is also an important service in some real-time distributed systems b...
متن کاملFault-Tolerance Analysis of Mixed CAN/Switched Ethernet Architecture
CAN is a well known fieldbus standard used in safety critical applications of embedded systems. However, steadily increasing amount of exchanged information in such systems has led to the use of Switched Ethernet like solutions. Mixed CAN/Switched Ethernet architectures allow to bypass CAN limitations while preserving the widely used CAN technology. In order to use this kind of architecture in ...
متن کاملNetwork calculus: application to switched real-time networking
In this paper, we show how Network Calculus can be used to determine whether a switched network may satisfy the time constraints of a real-time application. If switched architecture are interesting in the sense that they offer flexible design and may eliminate collisions in Ethernet-based network, they are not guaranteeing end-to-end performances (in particular in terms of delay), especially wh...
